Are You Ready? Here Comes 2020!

How was your year? If you are like most green industry professionals we have talked to, we are guessing it was pretty awesome. If you are like those pros, you are planning on having a spectacular 2020 also. So, what are you working on this winter to make sure your business has that spectacular 2020? We asked that exact question to your peers, industry consultants and manufacturers. They gave us some fantastic take-aways that hopefully you can use in your own business. Here is what they had to say.

Maurice Dowell, Clp.
Dowco Enterprises Inc. – Chesterfield, Missouri

“For a successful 2020 we have pushed the needle, shooting for a 90% renewal rate. Since we are not sure of H2B, we are upping the hiring of locals and beginning our spring             services earlier.”

John Janes
Caterpillar Inc. – Raleigh, North Carolina

“I would like to see green professionals put more money in their wallet by eliminating safety incidents in their business.   The issue with safety incidents is that safety is symptomatic of the quality and robustness the operational processes. By correcting processes, contractors will have more money in their pocket.”

Tish Campbell
Tish Landscape Design – Hingham, Massachusetts

“I usually take the winter to look at my design process; take stock of the year and see what worked and what didn’t; and educate myself on another aspect of this immense field- this year I am learning about storm water systems.”

Matt Postlethwait, GM
Beechfield Landscaping, Inc. – Woodbine, Maryland

“We are planning to spend some time training over the winter.  We have a couple of recently promoted installation foreman signed up to attend OSHA training (specific to the landscape industry).  We have also ordered six snow removal training and safety videos from SIMA…….I need to order the popcorn yet.   On the administrative side, we will be working on updating our employee handbook.  “

Andrew Ziehler, Landscape Industry Certified
Ziehler Lawn and Tree Care – Centerville, Ohio

Andrew is also the current President of the National Association of Landscape Professionals

“Our leadership team starts with our 2 day strategic planning meeting in December where we start by listening to feedback from team members and customers.  We then select the targets and top company priorities for 2020 followed by selecting targets, company and individual priorities for Q1 that will put us in position to accomplish the targets and priorities for the year.”

Luke Brockway
Caterpillar Inc. – Raleigh, North Carolina

“I usually take the winter to look at my design process; take stock of the year and see what worked and what didn’t; and educate myself on another aspect of this immense field- this year I am learning about storm water systems.”

Phil Harwood
Grow The Bench – Grand Rapids, Michigan

“Great question. Of course, I’d like them to make a big investment in professional development of themselves and their people using GTB!”

Char Mufich
Cornerstone Partners Horticultural Services Company  – St. Charles, Illinois

“Our 2020 strategies include managing our client’s needs by focusing on the details, enabling us to exceed their expectations. We would prefer to install 10 jobs perfectly than install 100 jobs that don’t meet our standards solely to Increase our volume numbers.”

We want to hear from you. What are you doing this winter to make sure 2020 is a spectacular year?
